IdukayPerú is a not-for-profit organization that has worked since 2001 to promote development in marginalized, urban sectors of Lima and Peru. Founded by a group of young Peruvians and international volunteers under the leadership of Alexander Callan, the NGO has principally focused its efforts in parts of Callao where residents live in a situation of extreme poverty and social exclusion. The mission of IdukayPerú is to improve the quality of life of those who cannot meet their most basic needs, by offering educational programs, improving sanitation, and offering a wide range of humanitarian and social assistance. The organization is made up of an international network of volunteers who are committed to working for social change. In this way, IdukayPerú brings together the knowledge and experience of a diverse group of individuals in order to better serve the communities in which it operates. Our Objective: Our goal is simply to lend assistance to those with the greatest need – people living in some of the worst-off places in Peru, people who need a better life. HELP US TO HELP!
Where do we work? The organization specifically operates in two human settlements in the constitutional province of Callao: Fertiza and Pachacutec. In the recently-formed settlement of Pachacutec, located in the mountainous desert of Ventanilla Callao, 96% of the population lives in extreme poverty, with 65% living on less than 1 US dollar per day. 84% of the dwellings there are made of sticks, cardboard boxes, rush mats, and plastic in their interiors; during the winter (June through August) they become wet every morning, as the climate is extremely humid and nights are cold. The other 16% are made out of provisional materials. The residents of Pachacutec rely on direct assistance to fulfill their most basic needs.
The other site is Fertiza, formally known as the human settlements of Francisco Bolognesi and Alcides Carrión. Many of Fertiza’s residents left their homes in rural parts of Peru in order to find work and a life of dignity in the capital. Unfortunately, due to the scarcity of resources, they are forced to live in conditions of extreme poverty.
Currently the settlement is made up of some 4,000 habitants, of whom 57% are children and teenagers living in extremely harsh conditions. They lack many vital services, including potable water, waste management / sewers, and health clinics, among others.
Another disadvantage this community faces is the continual flow of polluted water from Lima/Callao directly into the heart of Fertiza. This drainage poses serious health risks, giving rise to enormous problems of contamination and infection.
