IdukayPerú strives to provide educational support to children and parents alike, because we believe that this will best empower them to take charge of their lives; education is vital nourishment. Owing to their extreme living conditions, many children in Fertiza and Pachacutec suffer from malnutrition, anemia, and in some cases, tuberculosis. To begin to alleviate such problems, IdukayPerú has initiated a program to distribute meals on weekdays to 150 children in Fertiza and 100 more children in Pachacutec. We also collect medicines from volunteers who come to work with us in Peru. Thanks to these donations from abroad, we have been able to improvise a medicine kit for the community—though this is far from adequate medical treatment. How do we do it? IdukayPerú does not presently receive financial assistance from any larger organization. We hope to secure some form of institutional support with the help of past and present volunteers in Europe, North America, and Peru. For the time being, the organization must rely entirely on the generosity of its volunteers and the dedication of its director and his family in order to continue operating. It is mostly through sheer force of will, and the indefatigable spirit of its volunteers, that IdukayPerú is able to help those in need. Activities and Projects Recreational Saturdays IdukayPerú tries to give children something to look forward to on weekends. From 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. each Saturday, students can take part in extracurricular activities such as arts and crafts, music lessons, dance classes, and sports tournaments.
The primary objective of these activities is to entertain and educate kids during the hours that they would normally be passing their time in the streets with nothing in particular to do. In this way they can develop talents and interests rather than being drawn into idleness, delinquency, or drug use.
Health Is Life IdukayPerú believes that, because health is an absolute necessity, it is also a right of every human being and worthy of government protection. Generally speaking, Lima and Callao do offer health services in the form of hospitals, medical centers, and private clinics. However, those living in peripheral neighborhoods and slums simply do not have the means to gain access to these services. We have begun to address this gap in care by creating a medicine chest for the marginalized communities we serve. Some medicines are brought over by volunteers from their home countries. We also count on the support of medical professionals who lend us their expertise and supply us with additional medicines.
Equally important are several mothers in Pachacutec and Fertiza who lend their time and experience as caretakers to dispense medications and administer vaccinations to children.
